Matt and Lauren opened their hearts to us during a gorgeous sunset in Hershey, PA. Our experience photographing them, alongside some of Pennsylvania’s best creatives, was a day we’re not soon to forget.
We’ve been really pushing ourselves since we relaunched earlier this year. We’ve deeply expanded our creativity. We’ve grown as artists. We’ve devoted ourselves to continued education and even begun making true friends in the wedding world. (Community over competition!) So, when the opportunity came to drive to Hershey, Pennsylvania and be amongst some of our favorite photographers, we jumped at the chance. The day was hosted by Jillian and Ryan McGrath of With Love and Embers. I feel really lucky to have been able to call them friends the last few years. (Jillian even photographed me a while back in my studio!) They completely opened their home to Ashley and I as well as the talented Dani Dietz, Nina Lily, and Brittany Raine. We spent hours learning everything from album designs to new ice breaking techniques. It was incredible to hear and share a myriad of stories from years and years of collective experience. There really is a feeling of “homecoming” when you’re in a room filled with others who also love what they do.
In addition to a full day of photography nerd-out bliss, we had the opportunity to photograph Lauren and Matt of The More We See. These two went from pure genuine laughter one minute to near tears from a warm embrace in another. Their love, and the emotional connection they have, is truly inspiring. They are partners in every way, shape, and form. They exude a magic when together. Being a fan of their work for many years, it was a bit surreal to learn from them and experience their openness in front of a camera lens.
Through action, they taught me one of the most important lessons I’ve learned about the dynamics between photographer and couple. I’d like to pass that on to any of my future couples reading this: Be open and be yourselves. Shying away from the camera is counterintuitive to this experience. To have your partnership documented in a genuine way you must breathe, let all insecurities fall away, and love as if no one else is there.
A very VERY big thank you to Jill, Ryan, Matt, Lauren, and everyone who made that Tuesday one of our best. We are forever grateful for the knowledge gained and life lessons learned.
